Safe Child Policy

Safe Child Policy

1. Parents are responsible for the behavior of their children while they are in the Library.
2. The Library assumes no responsibility for children left unattended on library premises. When the safety of an unattended child is in doubt, staff will contact the parents or caregivers. If they are not readily available, staff will contact the appropriate law enforcement office.
3. If an unattended child is in the Library prior to closing time, library staff will give the child an opportunity to call a parent or caregiver for a ride. If a parent or caregiver does not come to pick up the child, library staff will contact the appropriate law enforcement agency. Under no circumstances is library staff to take a child home or give the child a ride in their personal vehicle.
Failure to abide by these policies may result in loss of library privileges.

Library staff will approach disruptive children in the following manner:
1. Give a verbal warning to the child indicating that such behavior is disruptive to other library users and is unacceptable.
2. If the disruptive behavior still continues, approach the parent or guardian with the same warning. If the child is unattended, give the child a second warning.
3. If the disruptive behavior still continues, request the parent or guardian escort the child from the library premises. If the child is unattended, the Library reserves the right to contact the child’s parent or guardian about the child’s conduct.
4. If a child is asked to leave library premises, library staff will give the child an opportunity to call a parent or caregiver for a ride. If a parent or caregiver does not come to pick up the child, library staff may contact the appropriate law enforcement agency.
5. If the situation requires prompt remediation, the staff may take immediate action to resolve the issue.
